THE Italians have a theory that the perfect football match should be 0-0;the game can only be perfect if there are no mistakes, and if there are no mistakes there will be no goals.

Yeovil and Cheltenham’s collective response to this theory was a 0-1 shambles if you were Russell Slade, or the perfect tactical game if you were John Ward. Cheltenham looked a poor side, muscular, effervescent, but short of class and overly reliant on long punts to the outstanding Odejayi or the composed Melligan. Having flattered to deceive Yeovil was unable to rise above this and found themselves on the back foot as Melligan pulled Forbes and Lynch all over the pitch. Cheltenham played every other ball deep from their half into their front men.

Little football was played in the first half as the visitors played the classic spoiling game, with the full repertoire of bad sportsmanship being applied with aplomb, the game descended into a scrappy affair and into Cheltenham’s hands as they played ugly, workman like football.

The second half could only improve and it couldn’t have started with a better statement as Kalala and Terry decided to turn up, but Cheltenham soon took advantage by playing through them towards Odejayi and his hardworking shadow Skiverton. Terry dropped deep to protect the defence and Kalala clearly couldn’t handle the aggressive, direct and athletic Cheltenham and stumbled instead of controlling the ball. He had to be replaced by Barry. But it was too late, Stewart was already dropping deep to collect and his clever blind runs, position finding and pulling defenders away is needed at the front line, not helping out a floundering Cohen filling the void left by Kalala and Terry.

Everything else was woefully off target , Cohen, Gray and Stewart all guilty of misses. Slade played option two for the first time and the long ball was employed, Yeovil Town had lowered themselves to the level of the hard working Cheltenham or played into Cheltenham’s hands if you were a visitor. Game over, a perfect game and three points for John Ward. Then the Robins sealed the win with a finely taken header by Melligan.

Nobody, even one suspects in Yeovil itself, believes the Glover’s will remain in the promotion places for long, and on this evidence they will do well to avoid relegation if Terrell Forbes gets injured and Marcus Stewart returns to Bristol City.
