Chris Cohen does not think he will be playing for West Ham next season - and has not ruled out a return to Yeovil Town. The talented 19-year-old took Huish Park by storm after joining the Glovers in November.
Cohen's boundless energy and composure on the ball played a major role in Yeovil's success in avoiding an instant return to League Two.
Remarkably, the teenager even beat the likes of Terry Skiverton and Phil Jevons to win the club's player-of-the-season award as Steve Thompson guided the club to its highest ever finish.
Cohen still has a year left on his West Ham contract and is now back in London However, he does not believe he will play for the Premiership club next term.
Instead, it seems likely that he will spend another season out on loan, or even be transferred to a new club - and Yeovil have already registered their interest.
"I have not really spoken to West Ham about my future yet - I'm waiting to hear back from the manager (Alan Pardew)," Cohen said last night.
"But I'm pretty sure I'll either be going on loan somewhere or leaving.
"Although that is not definite, the manager seems to think that is the most likely thing.
"West Ham are in Europe next season and I think they will use that extra money to bring in some more big-name players, making it harder for the likes of me to get into the side.
"But nothing is definite yet, so I just have to wait and see what comes out over the next few weeks.
"Obviously, the manager was busy with the FA Cup final over the last few weeks!"
After impressing so much in League One last season, a logical step might be for West Ham to see how Cohen fares at the next level, and loan him to a Championship club.
However, the midfielder is not entirely certain that would be the best move for him.
He said: "I have to ask what is better for me personally - to go to a good Championship team and play half the games, if that, or go to a League One side and play all the games.
"I have to be patient and speak to a few people, like my agent, and hear what they think is best for me."
So what about a return to Huish Park?
"I definitely would not rule that out," Cohen said. "They have been in contact and they're waiting as well. I had a brilliant time down there so it is definitely a possibility."
Cohen admitted he is watching with interest to see who Yeovil appoint as manager following the board's decision to move Steve Thompson back into the role of first team coach last week.
The club yesterday announced that due to a higher than expected number of applications, a decision may not be reached until Thursday,
However, Cohen does not believe the outcome would have a huge bearing on whether he wanted to return or not.
He said: "Obviously I am interested to see who will be appointed, but I was also disappointed for Thommo, because he did such a good job last season.
"It's good the club have given him a role for next season and that just shows how good a job he did and how much he is respected down there.
"Who the manager is always has a part to play when you're deciding which club to join, but the good thing is that I already know the club as a whole.
"I know what it's like down there so I don't think that would be too much of a factor in my decision, but obviously the new manager would have to want me. He might have different opinions so I just have to see how it all works out."
Yeovil will hand Bournemouth midfielder James Rowe a pre-season trial. |
